“A Portuguese Century”. Watch the interview with Adriano Moreira

Episode 1. From arrival in Lisbon to prison with Mário Soares.

Adriano Moreira, son of a miller from a village in Trás-os-Montes, arrives in Lisbon on his mother’s lap. He manages to get a university degree – something that is really rare for people of such humble origins. In this first episode, interviewed by Viriato Soromenho-Marques, we follow the end of the course at the university to the first cases as a lawyer and then the prison, where he first meets Mário Soares.



Episode 2. Defending Equal Rights Abroad

Overseas is a key word in Adriano Moreira’s life. The defense of human rights forms the basis of his academic career and in this he meets Marcelo Caetano as an opponent. He is the driving force behind the transformation of the Colonial School into the Overseas Social and Political Science Institute, currently ISCSP. It is at this stage of his life that he takes up a position at the UN. The interview will be conducted by Viriato Soromenho-Marques.

Episode 3. Salazar’s Invitation and Resignation, One Year Later

Salazar invites Adriano Moreira to take up the position of Secretary of State for Overseas – later a minister. The Indigenato statute is the last straw between him and Salazar. “Withdrawn”, Adriano Moreira concluded. Viriato Soromenho-Marques conducts the interview and we travel to the political upheavals of that decision, which later led to the split with the head of government.

Episode 4. From the 1960s to the Present. A proof of the land

From the modus operandi of Salazar’s governments to his political career with the CDS, Adriano Moreira gives us his vision of the country from the 1960s to the present – as well as proof of the meaning of his life. Interview conducted by Viriato Soromenho-Marques.
