Twenty senators from the LR propose to modify the secularism law of 1905 to “preserve the cribs”, which are “cultural and not religious symbols” and “immemorial traditions of the French nation”, in a press release published this Thursday.
Retired nurseries in Perpignan and Béziers
The senators, led by Stéphane Le Rudulier (LR / Bouches-du-Rhône), have presented a bill (PPL) in reaction to recent court decisions that ordered the removal of the nativity scenes installed in the Hôtel of the city of Perpignan by the mayor RN Louis Aliot and of Béziers (Hérault) whose mayor Robert Ménard is close to this party.
The Human Rights League (LDH) had taken justice in a summary trial, an emergency procedure, considering that these nurseries were contrary to the 1905 law.
“The symbols of our traditions are attacked by an extremist and Wokista political movement that seeks to deconstruct who we are: Christmas trees, nativity scenes, santons, galettes des rois and even Easter eggs are the object of attacks,” the senators wrote. ppl.
“Cultural and non-cultural symbols”
“In order to preserve the nativity scenes”, which are “cultural and non-cultural symbols, of the immemorial traditions of the French nation, (the senators) presented a bill intended to modify article 28 of the law of December 9 of 1905 relating to the separation of church and state,” the statement said.
Les élus proposent de compléter l’article 28 “en ajoutant des cas d’exception en lien avec les traditions immemoriales de la France, à savoir la présence temporaire des crèches et arbres de Noël, de santons, des galettes des rois et d’oeufs Easter”.
The Beaucaire (Gard) nurseries, whose far-right mayor is Julien Sanchez, and Béziers are regularly the subject of legal proceedings, but continue to be installed each year by city councillors.
In Perpignan, the nursery, considered non-transportable by the town hall, will remain in the town hall and will be dismantled at the start of the school year in January.
