The deputy secretary-general of the PS on Wednesday accused the chairman of the PSD of spreading misleading messages about the social situation in the country and defended that the socialist governments had lifted 430,000 people out of poverty since 2015.
This position of João Torres emerged after Luís Montenegro on Tuesday evening in Beja accused the Prime Minister, António Costa, of “wanting to accustom the Portuguese to poverty”, and also warned that the Socialists would have to get used to a “demanding” opposition.
By insisting on a misleading message of impoverishment, with which he tries to mislead the Portuguese, the opposition leader is discrediting himself – and his party – at the speed of light, without adhering to reality. pic.twitter.com/TAOqg2WOnK

In his account on the social network Twitter, the “number two” of the PS leadership opined that the social-democratic leader, “by persisting in a misleading message of impoverishment, with which he tries to deceive the Portuguese, himself – and his party – at the speed of light, without any adherence to reality”.
According to João Torres, since the PS exercised government responsibilities, “average household income has risen uninterruptedly”.
“Since 2015, we have lifted 430,000 people out of poverty and social exclusion and GDP (Gross Domestic Product) per capita has increased by 9% in real terms,” he continued.
The deputy general secretary of the PS later acknowledged that “there is still a lot to do” in the fight against poverty”.
“That is why we will continue to govern with determination and social justice,” he added.
