Rui Rio resigns as PSD representative

Former PSD chairman Rui Rio has already filed his request to step down as a deputy, while former MP Paulo Mota Pinto asked for a five-month suspension, a bank source confirmed.

News of the long-awaited departure of Rio and Mota Pinto from parliament was reported by Público newspaper.

A source from the Social Democratic Bank confirmed to Lusa that the two requests have already been received and are to be announced in the first plenary session on Wednesday after the parliamentary holiday.

Rui Rio, elected by the Porto constituency, will be replaced by António Cunha, from Penafiel, 15th on the list, who has already sat in the Assembly of the Republic in the previous parliamentary term.

The former leader of the PSD between 2018 and July 2022 had already announced that he would leave parliament in early September.

Paulo Mota Pinto was the parliamentary leader of the PSD between April and July this year – he left at the request of the new party chairman, Luís Montenegro – after he was replaced at the head of the bank by Joaquim Miranda Sarmento.

With the request for suspension of duties by Mota Pinto, who had headed the PSD list for Leiria, João Carlos Barreiras Duarte, who was once deputy and brother of another former parliamentarian and former secretary-general of the PSD, will return to the Assembly of the Republic.
