Pensions: Republican parliamentarians “ready to support reform” but under certain conditions

The president of the group Les Républicains in the National Assembly listed several points that his party would like to see included in the pension reform project that the Government is taking to vote on.

Republicans are “willing to support a reform” of pensions, in “some conditions” considered “essential” on small pensions and long careers in particular, the head of deputies LR Olivier Marleix said on Tuesday.

Among these conditions, “we hope that at some point the contribution period will prevail on the subject of age” and the LR will be “very attentive” to a system of long careers, he said during a press conference.

He also considered it “imperative” that the minimum pension, “announced at 1,200 euros” per month, “is not only offered to future retirees”, but also concerns current retirees.

Another point of vigilance: “the pace” of the reform, which should not be “brutal”, he argued, referring to “a quarter per year” of the increase in the age of majority, “which leads to 63 years at the end of the five-year period, with a review clause” and “64 years for the next five-year period”. The president of the LR party, Éric Ciotti, said he was ready this weekend to “vote on a fair reform” of pensions, which would be distributed “over two five-year periods.” Finally, the money from contributions should “go only to retirees”, estimated Olivier Marleix.

Dissonance within the party?

Are there disagreements in LR about the advisability of voting for the reform? “We will wait to see the text” because “the devil can hide in the details,” warned the leader of the Republican deputies.

“We are united in the measures that we have put on the table,” he added. “We assume the defense of the distribution system” which is “the DNA of our political family.”

“We are not potiches”, for his part, the Lot deputy Aurélien Pradié affirmed, promising “to ensure that this reform is in the interest of the country”.

“If tomorrow we have a reform that improves small pensions, allows women’s pensions to be better, and that those who started early leave only with the contribution period, we will have obtained everything necessary,” he said and advocated for “the who started working before the age of 21 to be able to leave with 42, 43 annual contributions”.

The deputy of Pas-de-Calais Pierre-Henri Dumont underlined the role of LR in the inflections of the text: “It is we who have softened the bill.”
