The polls follow one another and they are similar. A large majority of the French have indicated for several weeks that they are against the pension reform that Emmanuel Macron wants. And the presentation of the government project by Elisabeth Borne this Tuesday does not change anything: 59% of the French say they are “opposed” to the pension reform, according to an ELABE poll for BFMTV carried out in the hours after the announcements of the Prime Minister and her interview with the “20 hours” of France 2.
Almost all sociodemographic and professional categories, particularly workers (76%) and employees (67%) declare themselves “opposed” to the reform. Only retirees and those over 65 say they are in favor of the project (60%).
This opposition is stronger than that registered against the pension reform by the Elabe institute in January 2020. At that time, 53% of the French said they were opposed to the text led by Edouard Philippe.
“Another pension reform is possible”
The pension reform, which therefore provides for a postponement of the legal retirement age to 64 and a progressive increase in the contribution period, also seems “unfair” to 58% of those consulted. An opinion again shared by all categories of the population, with the exception of retirees (38% consider the government project “unfair”, 48% consider it “fair”).
If the reduction in pensions and the increase in the retirement age are widely rejected, respectively by 93 and 66%, the increase in the financial contribution of the richest households is supported by a majority of French people (58%).
Three out of four French people (76%) believe, therefore, that there are “other possible reforms, other than that of the government, to guarantee the functioning of the pension system”.
Sample of 1002 people representative of mainland French residents aged 18 and over. The representativeness of the sample was ensured according to the quota method applied to the following variables: sex, age and profession of the interviewee, prior stratification by region and agglomeration category. Internet interview on January 10, 2023.
Field made entirely after the press conference and the television interview with Elisabeth Borne on the 8pm newscast on France 2.
