Quatennens case: Renaissance wants to propose a sentence of disqualification in case of violence

The patron saint of Renaissance deputies has presented a bill signed by all members of her group to prohibit elected officials found guilty of domestic violence from returning to politics. The movement itself had been pointed out in the case of Jérôme Peyrat, invested in a prize for the legislative elections and convicted of violence against his former partner.

Do not let go After the return this Wednesday morning of Adrien Quatennens to the National Assembly, Aurore Bergé drafted a bill to create a sanction of disqualification for elected officials recognized for certain violence.

“This return cannot be ignored, there is nothing natural, nothing banal, nothing normal,” said the patron saint of Renaissance deputies on Wednesday, accompanied by Sacha Houlié, the president of the justice commission, at the BFMTV microphone.

A speech a few meters from Quatennens

Sentenced to 4 months in prison conditional for domestic violence, then excluded from his parliamentary group until April 13, the deputy from the North had indicated on our antenna in December that “probably” he would return to the National Assembly “as of the month of January”, “when parliamentary work resumes” while non deputy deputy.

As a symbol, the two elected Macronists had decided for their announcement to speak in front of the Foreign Affairs Committee building, where Adrien Quatennens sat for the first time since his retirement.

“Drawing the consequences of a legal vacuum”

Its objective is to expand a provision of the criminal code, which already provides for a mandatory disqualification sentence for certain crimes, in particular violence resulting in total incapacity for work (ITT) for more than 8 days. But it is by no means mandatory below this figure.

The text, already signed by all the elected representatives of the group even before the effective return of the deputy from the North, would thus extend the measure to convictions for acts of violence resulting in an ITT of less than or equal to eight days, in particular on a minor of fifteen years or on his spouse. The bill could be considered next March.

“We drew the consequences of a legal vacuum that we had observed during the sentencing of Adrien Quatennens by the courts,” further explained Sacha Houlié, president of the Legal Commission.

Renaissance had invested a candidate convicted of violence

During the last legislative elections, Renaissance had invested Jérôme Peyrat. Candidate in the Dordogne, this framework of the majority had however been sentenced in 2020 for violence against a former partner. Under pressure and after the words of Stanislas Guérini, then head of the party who had called him an “honest man” and then backtracked, he finally withdrew his candidacy.

This isn’t the first time Renaissance has publicly scolded Adrien Quatennens. Aurore Bergé, had mentioned – without naming him – his case during the first question session with the government at the beginning of the last school year.

His arrest provoked a strong reaction from left-wing deputies. The LFI deputy, Danièle Obono, had been called to order by Yaël Braun-Pivet, president of the National Assembly.
