The French are overwhelmingly opposed to pension reform… except retirees

According to a new ‘L’Opinion en direct’ survey carried out by Elabe for BFMTV, 52% of the pensioners surveyed declared themselves in favor of the pension reform presented by the Borne government.

A pension reform acclaimed by the French… who are already retired. According to a new poll “L’Opinion en direct”, carried out by the Elabe Institute for BFMTV, almost 6 out of 10 French people (59%) say they are opposed to the pension reform announced by Elisabeth Borne. But if 67% of workers are against (42% quite against and 25% very much against) the government text, 52% of retirees are in favor of this reform.

In detail, 54% of retirees support the measure consisting of raising the legal retirement age to 64 years for three additional months a year until 2030, compared to only 24% of the active.

In addition, 58% of retirees say they are in favor of accelerating the gradual extension of the contribution period necessary to receive a full pension, until reaching age 43 in 2027. On the contrary, only 36% of assets support the extent.

Those over 65 support the reform

From a generational point of view, 62% of those over 65 years of age are in favor of the text defended by the Government. 57% within this same age group support the postponement of the legal retirement age to 64 by 2030 and even 60% want the implementation of the “Touraine” reform to be accelerated. In all other age groups, the reform is contested by a majority of French people.

In favor of the reform, pensioners logically support the mobilization against it less: they are 48% to approve it and 45% to be hostile to it. Among the workers, 64% show their approval of this challenge and only 20% are against it.

Invited this Wednesday morning by France info, the president of the French Confederation of pensioners, Pierre Erbs, said he regretted the postponement of the legal exit age to 64, as well as the lack of measures for the purchasing power of current pensioners. However, he does not call a demonstration with the other union organizations for Thursday, January 19.

Survey conducted online on January 10, 2023 on a sample of 1,002 people representative of mainland French residents aged 18 or over. The representativeness of the sample was ensured according to the quota method applied to the following variables: sex, age and profession of the interviewee, prior stratification by region and agglomeration category. Field made entirely after the press conference and the television interview with Elisabeth Borne on the 8pm newscast on France 2.
