Livre will vote this Thursday against the motion of censure submitted by the government by the Liberal Initiative (IL). However, criticizing António Costa’s executive, Rui Tavares’ party believes this motion of censure is “unimportant” and does not offer a “government alternative”.
Livre thus joins the PS and the PCP in voting against the IL initiative, which is being debated and voted on today in the Assembly of the Republic. PSD and BE decide to abstain from voting and Chega votes in favour.
For Livre, this motion of censure amounts to “a propaganda exercise, which constitutes only an ideological manifesto against the social state and anti-left”.
“The vote of Livre will be against this motion, which has not reserved any line for a government solution for this government,” reads the note sent to party members, which DN had access to.
The motion of censure against the government, remember that, was filed by IL after the resignation of Pedro Nuno Santos, former Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, due to the most recent controversy at TAP, which involves a fee of 500 thousand euros, paid by the airline, to Alexandra Reis, who resigned as Secretary of State for Finance, at the request of Finance Minister Fernando Medina. A political crisis that also brought down the State Secretary for Infrastructure.
“This crisis is proof that an absolute majority is not synonymous with government stability. Closed in on itself, the PS has not been able to earn the confidence that the Portuguese gave it in the last legislature,” says Livre.
The party believes that this is a “crisis arising from the lack of control that the rulers have, especially in an absolute majority” and that the solution does not come through “propaganda and marketing exercises”, but rather “with proposals for solutions “. that prevent new cases like Alexandra Reis from being repeated”.
Livre therefore defends that one of the solutions to prevent this kind of situation from happening again is “control through preliminary hearings of candidates for governors in the Assembly of the Republic”, as is the case in several countries, as well as in the European Union, “where this preliminary investigation is carried out in order to minimize irregular situations and potential conflicts of interest”.
“This crisis probably would not have happened if the rulers had also had to answer questions from the opposition in Portugal before taking office. This is a measure proposed by Livre in the ongoing constitutional review, the reality of which has turned out to be this one is essential,” the party reads.
Portugal, continues Livre, “does not need a crisis of political instability such as the one it is experiencing today”, pointing out that the country must focus on concrete solutions for the lives of people, families and businesses, “at a time of high inflation, war in Europe, increase in Euribor rates, crises in healthcare and education”.
