The current first secretary of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, came out first in the first round of the party congress on Thursday. His motion “To Win” would have obtained between 47.5 and more than 50% of the votes, according to the first tendencies.
Since the end of the vote on Thursday night, it is a real battle of figures between the Socialists that takes place on social networks. Olivier Faure’s team assures that the First Secretary obtained more than 50% of the votes, while those close to the mayor of Rouen, the outsider Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, affirm that the threshold has not been crossed.
But it is the mayor of Rouen that Olivier Faure should face next week during the second round of the PS congress. Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol’s motion, “Refoundations”, would have obtained around 30% of the vote.
PS members will vote on January 19, before a congress scheduled for January 27-29 in Marseille.
Is the future of Nupes at stake?
The mayoress of Vaulx-en-Velin, Hélène Geoffroy, highly critical of Nupes, is in third place, with around 20% of the vote, according to early trends.
The final results could not be known until Friday morning. And it will be closely scrutinized by the Nupes. At the end of the first round, will Olivier Faure’s two competitors join forces against him? Some do not exclude the hypothesis.
On Thursday morning, Stéphane le Foll said thus in Public Sénat that he wanted “a meeting” of Hélène Geoffroy and Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol to take the leadership of the party, with “always the prospect of an alliance on the left, but not on a line dictated by LFI”.
