The PS announced on Tuesday that it would make a proposal for an investigative committee at TAP do Bloco de Esquerda possible, in response to the compensation of 500,000 euros awarded to former administrator Alexandra Reis.
In the opposite direction, the PS will vote against Chega’s identical proposal.
This decision was announced in the Assembly of the Republic by the parliamentary leader of the Socialists, Eurico Brilhante Dias.
On December 27, Finance Minister Fernando Medina fired Alexandra Reis as Secretary of State for Finance, less than a month after inviting her to this government post and after four days of controversy over the €500,000 compensation. that this had been given a career manager by TAP, a company then overseen by the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, who resigned a day later to “take political responsibility” for the cause.
The coordinator of the Bloco de Esquerda on Saturday opined that the PS should be the first to want a parliamentary committee of inquiry into TAP, claiming that clarification is essential for the legitimacy of the government itself.
Catarina Martins spoke to journalists in Lisbon at the end of a meeting with the National Union of Civil Aviation Flight Personnel, Ricardo Penarroias – a union leader who expressed his full support for the creation of a parliamentary committee of inquiry into the national airline in the Assembly of the Republic .
“The first call we make is for the PS to approve the Commission of Inquiry proposed by the Bloco de Esquerda, because it is a necessity for democracy to get clarification,” defended Catarina Martins, later alluding to the fact that the socialist bank has an absolute majority in parliament.
“Of course, if the PS is against it, I hope that it is possible for this committee of inquiry to exist on the basis of all other mechanisms available to parliament,” he added, in an indirect reference to the possibility of the PSD accepting that this Commission of Inquiry is making positive progress.
Doubts increased among the coordinator of the Bloco de Esquerda after statements made in parliament on Friday by Finance Minister Fernando Medina.
Fernando Medina “has said all along that he had no idea about the path of his former secretary of state Alexandra Reis, but now he has admitted that after all, he knew Alexandra Reis had left TAP halfway through TAP’s tenure. I knew it had come out in an agreement that had to do with a conflict within the administration itself, but I just did not know that I had received half a million euros in compensation. Now, this whole story is very strange,” he noted.
From the perspective of the coordinator of the Bloco de Esquerda, “knowing nothing negates a form of degradation of the conditions of the administration itself. Therefore, for these conditions to exist, the PS should be the first interested party in the committee. of research”.
Before the journalists, Catarina Martins defended that Bloco de Esquerda’s proposal for the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry “is sensible and has a very determined purpose to allow conclusions”, that is to say that “understands in a concise period what is happening at TAP and errors are corrected” in that company, investigating “the political responsibilities of the political tutelage”.
