PSD President Luís Montenegro reiterated this Friday that the political authority of Finance Minister Fernando Medina had been irreparably damaged by “the lightness” shown in Alexandra Reis’ choice of Secretary of State.
“I had an opportunity to say [no dia 02 de janeiro] that, the way this all happened, and that he [Fernando Medina] supposed to have no knowledge, it was not to create conditions for him to strengthen his authority. On the contrary, it had irreparably reduced his political authority,” he said in reference to the case of the compensation of 500,000 euros paid to Alexandra Reis to leave TAP and which forced her to resign as Secretary of State for Finance.
Luís Montenegro, who was in Lousã, in the Coimbra district, as part of the “Sentir Portugal” initiative, believed that electing a member of government “without scrutiny” or “making sure to know things almost visible to the naked eye” shows “a lightness” that “does not confer the authority that the Chancellor of the Exchequer ought to have”.
“And that’s what yesterday [quinta-feira] repeated, regardless of the fact that there are now other matters that need clarification,” he added, in an allusion to contracts signed by the Lisbon chamber when Medina presided over the autarchy.
Montenegro stressed that the A fundamental political issue has to do with “the process of appointing a secretary of state under circumstances which are not normal” and should have been ensured by the government itself.
“If I were prime minister, the last thing I would want is for members of the government to come and go quickly, as happened to this prime minister. For the sake of the government itself and even the interest of the country,” he insisted. .
For the PSD leader, the entrances and exits of members of the government do not give the government “the stability that enables it to have more efficient conditions of governance”.
“Unfortunately, this is ultimately reflected in omissions and failures,” he concluded.
