Coelho Lima and Carlos Eduardo Reis argue that there were reasons for PSD to approve IL censorship

PSD deputies André Coelho Lima and Carlos Eduardo Reis defended in an explanation of vote that there were reasons to disapprove of the government and pass the IL motion, warning of the risk of “lack of demarcation” in abstaining.

“The moral and consequently political downfall of the government must deserve censorship. And we believe that the moments of censorship warrant it; and these are not artificially created: they either exist or they don’t exist. And now they exist them clear”refers to an explanation of vote from the two deputies Lusa had access to, dated January 5, when the IL’s censure motion ‘failed’, with the PSD abstaining.

In the explanation of vote, which will soon be published in the Journal of the Assembly of the Republic, the two deputies – prominent supporters of former PSD chairman Rui Rio – justify following the abstention indicated by the party leadership because they considered that “voting discipline is essential to the functioning of representative democracy”.

“Nevertheless, a motion of censure against a government in office is a moment that calls for the ethical and political principles of each of the members elected by the Portuguese people as representatives in their legislative body. For the party to which we belong and serve”to justify.

Referring to the successive cases in government, especially those involving suspicions of misuse of public funds, the deputies believe that the current time “does not tolerate lukewarmness” and requires “the vocalization” of the differentiation of the PSD “in the way the entity is governed public, which this is not”.

“Institutionalism cannot make us distance ourselves from the people. Will there be any weightier arguments than these for censoring the government? Is it possible to have weightier reasons than these?”they wonder.

André Coelho Lima and Carlos Eduardo Reis point out that “the alternative is also confirmed in difference”.

“Not in the forced delineation or not based on beliefs. Not in the tactical and opportunistic delineation. But in the natural delineation, of policies and attitudes. send an ambiguous message to the voters”warn.

The two deputies dispute the central argument of the PSD leadership to justify the abstention of the IL text, that now would not be the time for new elections and that it was necessary to respect the popular will of the Portuguese who have an absolute majority gave to the PS in parliamentary elections less than a year.

“We did not want instability. It is true that elections were held less than a year ago, this circumstance cannot be ignored or ignored. But the truth is that the absolute majority on which the government is based frees up precisely the opposition parties to be more to be able to vote with conviction without having to look at what he considers his institutional responsibility given the proximity of the election documents”refer.

Coelho Lima and Carlos Reis point out that, if “the PSD vote would be indifferent to political instability, it is not clear why abstention is based on the argument of not wanting to contribute to political instability”.

The deputies admit that, under “normal circumstances”, nine months after taking office would be “too short a time” for motions of censure”.

“But we are not experiencing normal conditions. In fact, it is precisely the danger of normalizing the times we live in and the moments we have lived through that is the main driver of this explanation of vote. Since we believe that the absence of a violent delimiting what the Portuguese viewed is something that we cannot tacitly agree to in principle”to justify.
