Jamila Madeira defended her political behavior and cried during the session of the PS bench

Defending to PS deputies the “transparency” and “legality” of her political path, the vice president of the socialist bank Jamila Madeira cried in the last part of her intervention, socialist deputies told Lusa bureau.

On Saturday, Correio da Manhã reported that Jamila Madeira had accumulated the functions and fees of a deputy with that of a REN consultant since March last year. On July 28, the deputy asked the Statute of Deputies Transparency Commission for an opinion on her employment relationship.

The socialist deputy, who is also national secretary of the PS for International Relations, announced on Tuesday that she had suspended her employment contract with REN and assumed the mandate of deputy exclusively, with the aim of ending the controversy over the accumulation of a mandate in the Assembly of the Republic with that of a corporate adviser.

According to reports from today’s meeting, at the end of the intervention in which she tried to explain her case to the PS deputies, Jamila Madeira was moved, cried, applauded and comforted by colleagues on the bench.

On the socialist bench, some deputies defended to the Lusa bureau that Jamila Madeira should suspend her mandate until the “full clarification of the matter”, even accepting the claim that there was transparency and legality in her conduct.

Another current in the PS group fears that this case will add to the pressure to move towards mandatory exclusivity in the exercise of deputy functions – something that the Left Bloc defends, for example, but that the socialists have rejected.

In general, Jamila Madeira advocates that there is “no conflict of interest” between her duties at REN and her position as deputy.

This Wednesday, following an article in the newspaper Público, the deputy and vice-chairman of the socialist bank sent a statement in which she admitted to having been a REN lobbyist in European bodies for four years, from 2012 to 2015. headed the PS, then headed by António José Seguro.

After being a Member of the European Parliament between 2004 and 2009, Jamila served as a Member of Parliament in the Assembly of the Republic until 2011, when she returned to her original professional activity, at REN.

The bank’s deputy chairman and national secretary for international relations of the PS also defends that she has “always” met her declarative obligations in terms of income, remuneration, assets, incompatibilities and impediments”.

“I had suspended my position at REN between 1999 and July 2009. I again suspended my professional activity in November 2009 until April 26, 2011. Finally, I will again suspend my professional duty from January 1, 2023, information stated in my declarations of interests delivered to the TC,” the deputy wrote in the clarification she sent to Público.
