Enough wants to hear from “all responsible” about slippage in the works of the Military Hospital

Chega announced this Monday that it will ask for a hearing in the Assembly of the Republic of “all civil and military officials” on the budgetary slippage of the Belém Military Hospital works, admitting that it is making progress with the proposal of a committee of inquiry.

“Chega will summon to parliament all civil and military officials responsible for the Belém Military Hospital works,” Chega’s leader said at a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Lisbon.

André Ventura estimated that “between eight and fifteen people” are involved, both in the fields of Defense and Finance.

Chega’s leader said the request will be submitted to the parliamentary defense committee today and indicated that the pack of people he intends to call also includes former finance minister João Leão, who, since he is no longer part of the government, “will have been guests”, as well as at the time “former officials of the Secretary of State for Finance and who supervised the financial part of Defense”.

“Everyone will be asked to answer when the slippage of the value of the works became apparent, at what point the government was made aware of this slippage and who was responsible for approving it,” he stressed, pointing out that ” the request for value also had to be authorized by the Treasury Department”.

André Ventura argued that “there were those who were responsible for this process and who may have political responsibilities that they must abide by”.

“And that’s why we want to go through the whole circuit, from the budgeting to the definition, to the calendar, going through the moment when there was permission from Treasury for this work,” he continued, pointing to wanting to know “who authorized” the new budget.

Ventura said that if the PS does not allow these hearings, Chega may “call those responsible to the committee” and also admitted to proposing a committee of inquiry into the matter if he is not satisfied with the explanations that can be given.

Chega’s leader again defended the resignation of minister João Gomes Cravinho, justifying that, “since he insists on staying” in government, the party will propose these hearings, admitting that some could take place behind closed doors.

Last week, the parliamentary defense committee had already authorized the hearing of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Defense Minister, João Gomes Cravinho, and the Secretary of State for Defense, Marco Capitão Ferreira, on the “Perfect Storm” investigation. .

The newspaper Expresso reported on Friday that the former minister of defense and current minister of foreign affairs was informed by letter in March 2020 that the costs of the works on the former military hospital of Belém are skyrocketing. Document was already revealed by DN, in the March 5, 2021 edition.

According to the weekly, citing the March 2020 letter, the Director General of National Defense Resources (DGRDN), Alberto Coelho, – today charged with corruption and money laundering in Operation Perfect Storm – has informed the minister as works are already underway are talking about “additional work” that has already yielded almost an extra million euros.
