Bloco urgently wants to hear the FPF chairman in parliament

The parliamentary group of the Left Bloc requested an urgent hearing this Tuesday from the president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), Fernando Gomes, justified by the possible tax evasion and social security in contracts signed with the former national coach, Fernando Santos.

The Public Prosecution Service is investigating suspicions of tax crimes in the way the FPF paid salaries to Fernando Santos and the technical team. In September 2014, a service contract was signed with the coach company Femacosa, which was founded in the same year. “Of the 70,000 euros received by the company, about 25 percent went to the assistants, the rest remained in the company, which paid 5,000 euros a month to the selector and managing partner,” the party explains in a statement.

“This form of payment of salaries was the basis for the settlement of 4.5 million euros in taxes by the tax authorities, who believed that with this formula the coach was trying to avoid paying higher taxes through the IRS. Fernando Santos will have lost the case against the tax authorities over this type of contract. There is also another aspect to this type of payment: the social security contribution,” BE’s petition reads.

In October 2022, Fernando Santos lost the lawsuit against the Tax Authorities over the contract concluded with the FPF. The former national coach had asked for clarification about the tax regime that applied to the contract his company signed with the FPF in 2014. Fernando Santos felt it was clear that neither he nor the Federation were trying to devise a plan to deceive the IRS.

Bloco de Esquerda also recalls that the FPF has not revealed how much it will pay the new coach, Roberto Martínez, and what kind of contract it will sign with the technical team of the Spanish coach, “if you continue to want to hire everything a package , to a company that coordinates the technical team, or to sign individual contracts”.

“The nature of the public benefit of this entity and the importance this sport assumes imposes an obligation of transparency and rigor on the FPF. Suspicions of tax and social security evasion run counter to this obligation. About payment mechanisms and contracts signed by the FPF”, considers Bloco de Esquerda.
