An introduction that aims to summarize the relationship between the National Rally and La France insoumise. When asked about her refusal to shake Jordan Bardella’s hand when he walked onto the BFMTV set for a debate on pension reform, Mathilde Panot jumped in.
“I believe that RN will never be a party like the others,” said the president of the LFI deputies.
“You don’t shake hands with anyone”
“Did you shake hands with Mr. Véran?” asks the head of the RN.
“No”, then answers the chosen rebel.
“Ah, okay. So you’re not shaking hands with anyone,” Jordan Bardella replies.
“No, I say hello. I have also said hello to you”, Mathilde Panot then advances.
“Gathering together a majority of French people will be very complicated”, judges then the European deputy RN.
Louis Boyard had also refused to shake hands with RN-elect
This is not the first time that LFI elected officials have refused to shake hands with RN representatives. Last June, during the first session of the new National Assembly, Louis Boyard, one of the youngest deputies of the Nupes, had voluntarily ignored the outstretched hand of his RN colleague Philippe Ballard, provoking a torrent of reactions in the seats on the far right.
“Not shaking hands with an RN elected official is a political act,” his team later explained to BFMTV.com, adding that, on the other hand, we should not view it as a sign of “personal hostility towards Mr. Ballard.” .
With this very symbolic gesture, the elected rebels seek to stage their strong opposition to the RN after various traps set by Marine Le Pen. The former presidential candidate had thus voted for the first motion of no confidence presented by Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s movement last fall.
Marine Le Pen’s movement also wanted to defend several bills already defended by the rebels in the January chamber, such as the reinsertion of unvaccinated caregivers.
