Enough will coin in parliament to explain the cost of World Youth Day

Chega filed a request this Wednesday to invite the mayor of Lisbon to provide any clarifications to parliament on World Youth Day investments as “legitimate questions” arise.

Speaking to journalists in parliament, Chega’s president, André Ventura, began by underlining that the party is “extremely excited about the arrival of Pope Francis to Portugal”. “the costs presented for various instruments and others in the context of this World Youth Day, as well as the delay in meeting the deadlines, raise legitimate questions from Catholics and non-Catholics alike”.

“Understanding that the Chamber was unwilling to answer these questions satisfactorily, Chega today submitted a request to hear the Mayor of Lisbon as a guest. [Carlos Moedas]who made himself available to give all the explanations, and here in parliament to be able to answer three things precisely,” he said.

The questions that André Ventura hopes that the mayor of the municipality can answer the deputies is the why there was a direct award to Mota-Engil and why “we are talking about more than four million euros and what investments are actually being made”.

“What use will these structures be of after Pope Francis returns to Rome,” he wants to be clarified.

According to Chega’s deputy, “the Portuguese cannot make a huge financial sacrifice and sustain these investments if they don’t feel they are useless”.

Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas said on Wednesday he knew construction of the podium altar for World Youth Day (WYD) would be very expensive, indicating it will be done to the church’s specifications.

The mayor’s comment was made after it was announced that the construction work on the altar stage where Pope Francis will celebrate Mass will cost 4.2 million euros to the Chamber of Lisbon, by direct agreement.
