Ventura wants “leading role” in government and rejects “right-wing construction”

The president of Chega, André Ventura, defended this Thursday that the party should have a “predominant role” in an eventual government with the PSD and rejected the scenario of a “device on the right”.

In an interview with Lusa in the context of the party’s V National Convention, which takes place between Friday and Sunday in Santarém, the leader of Chega and candidate for another mandate said that this will be a moment of “clearing of waters”. in relation to the future.

“If there is no opposition [a concorrer à liderança do partido]so I think we can focus Congress more on what we want for the future and how we go from the protest party that elected a delegate to the party that now has 12 delegates and wants to be a government,” he said.

André Ventura cConsidered that this convention is “very important” because it is the first since the party managed to elect 12 deputies and form a parliamentary groupbut also because “it’s probably the last one before the next election”.

“And if there is a general election, do we agree with the PSD or not? In what terms? This is what this Congress should decide, because theoretically, if all goes well, there is no other for the general election.” , the various elections ahead,” he said, arguing that Chega needs to “prepare properly” and determine how it will present itself to voters.

Chega’s leader noted that the decision will be left to the convention, but he added that he will suggest to delegates “not to accept a device on the right”, claiming that “it is a mistake to model the reproduce” of the agreement in force in the last legislature between PS, PCP, BE and PEV.

“The device actually showed its own vulnerability. If the parties feel that they are just there to raise and lower their hands, but are not jointly responsible with the government, what happens is what we saw, a falling government fell apart, which finally fell in October 2021. Therefore, if Congress gives me the power to decide, I would never choose to go for a right wing,” he stressed.

André Ventura defended that “the parties committed to the government must commit fully and to the end”.

“A government solution in which everyone guarantees their difference, their individuality, but where everyone is jointly responsible for the solutions, because then a sense of institutional solidarity arises, and not everyone hunts for their own votes and worries about the country and the government falls after a year or two or three,” he said.

Chega’s leader indicated that he will propose that the party reject such agreements in the autonomous region of Madeira, but also in the Azores, where Chega signed an agreement of parliamentary slant.

Anticipating that Chega will try to form a government on his own, but acknowledging that this is “very complicated, very difficult,” Ventura said that if it’s not possible, the goal will be “to govern with a broad understanding, but with a predominant weight”. in Tjega”.

André Ventura stated that the party should “seek agreements leading to an expanded government in which Chega should play a predominant role, whatever that may be”.

Asked for clarification, the president and candidate indicated that the party should be part of an eventual government, “with ministries and with a decisive role in fundamental decisions”.

However, he pointed out that the result Chega gets in the next parliamentary elections will be “very important” as it will determine the margin of negotiation.

And he defended that voters should “clearly understand what they are voting for and what solutions are available when they go to vote”, claiming that in the last parliamentary elections there were “a lot of [eleitores] that they might even vote for Chega or PSD”, but “they felt that the PS was the only one that offered stability”, André Ventura.

“I think that was an asset of António Costa that we didn’t understand in time and it resulted in an absolute majority which, as you can see, is a disaster for the country,” he concluded.
