The President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, said this Friday that he does not see “social protest against the observance of World Youth Day (WYD)”, but rather “great joy”, highlighting the “huge benefits” that the country will have.
On the day that marks four years since the announcement that Lisbon would host the WYD, Santos Silva visited the headquarters of the organizing entity this afternoon after being questioned by journalists about recent days’ controversy over the cost of this event. , in particular the five million euros of the altar stage.
“I see no social resistance to World Youth Days, I see great joy across the country since Pope Francis announced that these World Youth Days will take place in Lisbon,” replied and refused that this case tarnishes the image of the country.
Despite believing that an event of this nature should not be reduced to a “cost-benefit analysis”, the President of the Assembly of the Republic was compelling: “All the cost-benefit analyzes I know clearly show that Portugal will benefit in every way from this achievement”.
