Ventura wants to lead the opposition in the next parliamentary elections

Chega President André Ventura set this Friday as a bar for the next parliamentary elections to overcome the PSD and lead the opposition, considering it possible to break the cycle of bipartisanship.

“We will fight to lead the opposition in Portugal”said the leader of Chega in his speech at the start of the V National Convention, which runs until Sunday in Santarém.

André Ventura, the only re-candidate for the leadership of the party, stated that “there are those who say that it is impossible to break the bipartisan, that it is impossible to break the PS and PSD cycle”.

“But we wouldn’t be here if we didn’t believe it was possible”he stressed.

Ventura defended that Chega was “born and has a strict vocation to rule Portugal”, saying he could not promise to win the next parliamentary election, but promised to “fight to get there”.

“I believe that if we are in the 15% [das intenções de voto nas sondagens]we can get to 20% and maybe God and fate will give us luck and work to get to 30% and be able to give this country a tour”he stressed.

Ventura emphasized that the party reached the third political power in four years of its life, classifying Chega as “one of the greatest political phenomena in modern Europe”.

Achievements take away space for “opposition”. [interna] consistent”

Chega president André Ventura on Friday believed that the results of the current leadership are depriving any internal opposition of room for maneuver, devaluing leader Nuno Afonso’s announced resignation.

“How could there be consistent opposition”internally, in a party that has gone from deputy to a third political force and already has 15% in the polls, asked André Ventura upon arrival at the Santarém Exhibition Center, where the V National Chega Convention will take place until Sunday .

Faced with the insistence of journalists who questioned him about the agreements with the PCP, which includes only one candidate for general secretary, Ventura said: “You can’t ask Chega for more internal democracy”.

Recalling the elections of delegates in all districts, in which ‘Anyone who wanted to could be a candidate’the leader of Chega tried to put an end to the question: “The truth is that the opposition [interna] it has no power and therefore it does not appear in the game”.

for ventura, ‘99% of the party is happy with the direction’ who has followed Chega and that’s why it would be “it is absurd to want to change leadership”.

‘What do you want? To get them out of the house?’counterattacked Chega’s leader and re-candidate, in reference to opponents who criticize but fail to appear at the magna rallies to challenge his leadership.

Regarding the announced retirement of Nuno Afonso, who even admitted to contesting the leadership, although he never realized the intention, Ventura noted: “People are free to leave.”

The 4th National Convention of Chega will take place between this Friday and Sunday in Santarém for the election of the president and the national bodies.

The magna meeting – the first since Chega became the third political force in parliament, with the election of 12 deputies – was scheduled after the Constitutional Court rejected the statutes, but the party decided not to make any further changes and to return to the approval of the original articles of association. from 2019.
