Crisis at the helm of the PS: towards an agreement between Olivier Faure and Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol?

The party leadership has indicated that a memorandum of understanding will be put to the vote of the Socialist delegates this Saturday early in the afternoon. He must ratify Olivier Faure’s victory and make Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol the first deputy secretary.

More than a week after the counting of the votes of the members of the PS, will the two candidates at the head of the party manage to agree? The answer will be known this Saturday afternoon, while the leadership of the PS has indicated that a memorandum of understanding between Olivier Faure and Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol will be put to the vote of the delegates, confirming the victory of the outgoing first secretary. socialists between 14 and 16 hours.

The text should make Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, who since the announcement of the results has contested the victory of his competitor and denounced “frauds and irregularities”, the first delegate secretary together with the pro-Faure mayoress of Nantes Johanna Rolland.

Hélène Geoffroy, leader of the anti-Nupes, will assume the presidency of the national council, the party’s parliament. Margin adjustments were still under discussion at noon.

Mayer-Rossignol “ready for a deal”

“We are ready for an agreement”, at the end of a “transparent and democratic exchange”, Nicolás Mayer-Rossignol explained to the press, after presenting it to his supporters.

“We have reached an agreement that will give color to the PS, it is not just a matter of organization chart, we need this agreement to be heard, I will be there as first deputy secretary […] Perhaps they expected a boss fight congress but it is not like that, ”he assured the BFMTV microphone.

Asked by AFP to know if he recognized that Olivier Faure was now unquestionably the first secretary, he defended, without specifying, that it was about “global governance”. The term “collegiate leadership,” which he wanted, was not retained in the text, management said.

This agreement is “a relief” but above all an “obligation” for the general secretary of the Parisian federation of the party. “We need a common fight and we have achieved this direction longed for by all. It is certainly a relief, but above all an obligation towards the people of the left. We had no right to divide. The stake is colossal.” commented Eric Algrain.

“All Night” Discussion

This agreement comes after “a whole night” of negotiations in Marseille, where the PS congress has been held since Friday. “We are 80% done, there is 20% left,” Johanna Rolland explained to the press this Saturday morning.

“Things have gone very well, we discussed at night, until 4:00 in the morning. […] There were substantive exchanges. We are at the end of the negotiation, it must be finished in the morning, ”he said.

“An hour ago, the smoke looked quite white,” said Boris Vallaud, an MP who is close to Olivier Faure. But “there is an architecture to be built with respect to what was expressed by the activists”, a “balance of the balance of power” that translates into “national thematic secretaries” and “order in the organization chart”.

The negotiations were notably unblocked when the third candidate at the head of the party, the mayor of Vaulx-en-Velin Héléne Geoffroy, who had supported Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol in the second round, indicated that she did not want to join the leadership, but rather to remain in the opposition.

Olivier Faure was confirmed as the winner last Sunday, after a verification commission. This determined that he won with 51.09% of the votes, compared to 48.91% of his rival.
