Gérald Darmanin presents his immigration bill this Wednesday, February 1, to the Council of Ministers. And the Minister of the Interior is far from having obtained a majority of votes in favor to approve his text.
“I know that there is also criticism for the labor side of the text. Let’s talk! Among the LR, some defend the idea of establishing quotas to limit regularizations. Let’s discuss it. We are open to all discussions within the framework of the parliamentary debate”, he declared in a long interview with the Parisian.
The Republicans have already made known their criticism of a text that they consider “insufficient.” Supporting a hard line on this highly flammable issue, the new party president Éric Ciotti lashed out at the government text, in particular brandishing the specter of massive regularizations on one of the key provisions of the text, residence permits for jobs in tension.
“I am the left of the majority”
“This fear is unfounded,” Gérald Darmanin tries to debunk, explaining that “to benefit from this title, you need three years of life in national territory. This only refers to live work. It is valid for only one year, which does not gives rise to the right to family reunification”.
“If Éric Ciotti and Bruno Retailleau (the head of the senators of LR, editor’s note) want to modify what we are proposing to be absolutely sure that there is no massive regularization, obviously we will discuss it,” he anticipates.
Asked about the state of mind of the left wing of the presidential majority in the event of too great concessions to LR, Gérald Darmanin, a defector from Nicolas Sarkozy’s former party, jokingly replied: “I am the left wing”, claiming to embody a “more social than liberal”.
