Euthanasia. Marcelo vetoed decree for unconstitutionality

The president of the republic on Monday vetoed the unconstitutional parliamentary decree decriminalizing the anticipation of medically assisted death, as required by the constitution, following the decision of the Constitutional Court.

This decision was announced through a message on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic after the Constitutional Court declared some standards of this diploma unconstitutional and submitted it for preventive inspection to the Head of State, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

“Now that the Constitutional Court has ruled today that the regulations of the new version of the Decree of the Assembly of the Republic on medically assisted death are unconstitutional, the President of the Republic will again return the diploma to the Assembly of the Republic, without promulgation , under the terms of Article 279, number 1, of the Constitution, as soon as the verdict of that court is published in the Diário da República,” the note reads.
