Pensions: for Bayrou, a “very important part of citizenship is not recognized in the reform”

According to the High Commissioner for Planning and head of the MoDem, “we do not share with the French the real reasons” for this bill.

François Bayrou admits it bluntly: “A very important part of the citizenry is not recognized in this reform” of pensions, defended by the executive. More precisely, 72% of the French are against it, according to the latest Elabe poll for BFMTV.

Because? “We have not shared with the French the real reasons” for this project, believes the High Commissioner for Planning. For him, it is above all a question of “justice”. “We do not have the money to finance pensions and that is where the greatest injustice lies,” he says. The head of the MoDem underlines the “truth of the figures”, arguing that “pensions have a deficit of 30,000 million euros a year”, relying on “a report to the Plan”.

“We make pensions pay the workers of tomorrow”

And develop:

We borrow the “money, that is, we make the pensions of tomorrow’s workers pay and therefore they are the ones who will stay at work and the young people who will arrive who will be in charge of paying these tens of billions of euros year”.

Still, the word “justice”, used regularly by the government at first, has lost its luster – “perhaps erroneously”, according to François Bayrou – in the language elements of the presidential field. Which is attacked by the opposition on the “injustices” of the reform, particularly on long careers and women.

“The worst way to start the debate”

The government has opted for firmness. It is not allowed to be done on the lace. This is demonstrated by the statements of Gérald Darmanin in the parisian. The interior minister accused the Nupes of seeking to “disorder the country,” while he criticized “a lazy and stupid leftism” that wants “a society without work, without effort.” “Frankly, this kind of confrontation is the worst way to start the debate,” according to François Bayrou.

“We must avoid excessive vocabularies,” he says.

For the rest of the debates, the latter claims to be heard. “The years of childbearing should not be a handicap,” he said on BFMTV-RMC, asking for “clarification” on this issue.

An “improvable” reform

Since the prime minister unveiled the outlines of the reform on January 10, François Bayrou has not been entirely convinced. “I think it can be improved,” he judged at LCI the next day. Unlike the government, the three-time presidential candidate is in favor of an increase in employer contributions.

From the beginning he has made his music heard. Before the resumption of parliamentary work last October, she had timed out on the pension file. “We are not in parts”said the direction of the Head of State, who wanted to go fast and possibly approve the reform by an amendment in the Social Security Financing Bill (PLFSS).

François Bayrou won his case and the executive agreed to leave more room for consultation. It remains to be seen if the changes he recommends to the version presented by the government will be followed.
