PS will chair the committee of inquiry on TAP, but defended that it should be Chega

The PS will take on the chairmanship of the parliamentary committee of inquiry into TAP, despite arguing that this place should belong to Chega, without announcing who will nominate for the position.

It had been explained at the last conference of leaders that there was a tie between Chega and PS according to the usual Hondt method in the distribution of parliamentary committee presidencies, leaving the decision to next Wednesday’s meeting.

“The tiebreak has so far been resolved by the services of the Assembly of the Republic, giving priority to the parliamentary group with the most presidents, the most deputies. The PS group has a different view, given that if the regulations are silent, electoral law must be applied and give priority to those who have fewer elected representatives,” the president of the socialist group, Eurico Brilhante Dias, told journalists at the end of the leaders’ conference.

That is, for the PS “the procedure was clear and the presidency would be for Chega”.

However, he added that the other parties defended that during the current legislature the procedure followed so far should be maintained and that this situation should be made explicit in the current revision of the regulation, with new rules to be introduced in September in the new session .

“We don’t want to turn a procedural issue into a political one, that’s why this presidency will be of the PS,” Brilhante Dias said.

When asked who he would nominate for that seat, the socialist parliamentary leader did not want to make it public yet.

When asked by the media about the news from Público that former Infrastructure Minister Pedro Nuno Santos will not act as deputy until July, the PS parliamentary leader said that “this is an individual decision”.

“I say the same as last time: this parliamentary group is the parliamentary group of Pedro Nuno Santos, of his party, without prejudice to the circumstances in which he returns to the parliamentary group, it is with great pleasure that we welcome him here. And I am sure we will have a more valuable parliamentary group with your participation,” he said only.

The Assembly of the Republic is today debating BE’s proposal to create a parliamentary commission of inquiry for the political oversight of TAP’s management, which has been approved, and another from Chega, which should be rejected.

The proposals will be voted on later on Friday.

On January 6, BE presented to Parliament the text proposing that the Commission of Inquiry “under the political supervision of TAP’s management” should focus, between 2020 and 2022, on the investigation into the entry and exit of former ruler Alexandra Reis and the responsibilities of the protection in the decisions taken.

The blockades want parliament to investigate the airline’s “process of co-opting, appointing or hiring Alexandra Reis for the administration”, as well as “the other directors and the conditions of application of the respective legal framework”.

The party also wants clarity on “the process and nature of the appointment of Alexandra Reis to the Board of Directors of NAV and the possible connection with the process of leaving the Board of Directors of TAP”.

The subject matter of the parliamentary inquiry defended by BE also includes the process of retirement of members of TAP’s governing bodies and “compensation payment practice”, as well as “the compensation paid to members of governing bodies”, in its various parts.
