PS will nominate Jorge Seguro Sanches as chairman of the TAP investigative committee

The PS will nominate deputy Jorge Seguro Sanches to chair the parliamentary committee of inquiry into TAP proposed by the Left Bloc, the party’s parliamentary leader Eurico Brilhante Dias announced on Thursday.

“I would like to announce that we will nominate Jorge Seguro Sanches as chairman of the parliamentary inquiry committee and that the PS coordinator in that committee will be deputy Carlos Pereira”announced the socialist parliamentary leader, Eurico Brilhante Dias, in statements to journalists in parliament after a meeting of the PS group.

According to Brilhante Dias, Jorge Seguro Sanches is “an experienced deputy” who is “accustomed to coordinating meetings throughout his parliamentary life and beyond”.

“In addition to his legal experience, he seems to us to be one of the people, personalities, deputies of our parliamentary group who would be in better circumstances to reach a great consensus in that parliamentary committee of inquiry,” emphasized Brilhante Dias, with his side Jorge Seguro Sanches and Carlos Pereira.

The PS parliamentary leader also added that his party “believes a lot” in Jorge Seguro Sanches’ abilities to be a president “not only impartial, but also one that contributes to the proper functioning of the parliamentary committee of inquiry”.

The PS will take on the chairmanship of the parliamentary committee of inquiry into TAP, despite defending that this place should belong to Chega.

It had been explained at the last conference of leaders that there was a link between Chega and PS following the usual Hondt method in the distribution of parliamentary committee chairmanships, after the decision was left to today’s meeting.

“The tiebreak has so far been resolved by the services of the Assembly of the Republic, giving priority to the parliamentary group with the most presidents, the most deputies. The PS group has a different view, given that if the regulations are silent, electoral law must be applied and give priority to those who have fewer elected representatives,” the president of the socialist group, Eurico Brilhante Dias, told journalists on Wednesday at the end of the leadership conference.

That is, for the PS “the procedure was clear and the presidency would be for Chega”.

However, he added that the other parties defended that during the current legislature the procedure followed so far should be maintained and that this situation should be made explicit in the current revision of the regulation, with new rules to be introduced in September in the new session .
