Raimundo responds to Santander president: “Profit comes at the expense of those who can barely eat on Monday”

PCP secretary-general Paulo Raimundo on Friday criticized statements by Santander Totta’s president, insisting that the bank’s profits come at the expense of those who dine on Fridays and those who can “barely” dine on Mondays.

At a PCP dinner meeting on Friday in Coimbra, Paulo Raimundo rejected statements by Santander Totta’s president, Pedro Castro e Almeida, who criticized the behavior of the Portuguese on Thursday, with “high standards of consumption, eating out Friday night.

“Well, here we are, on a Friday, having dinner”said the general secretary of the PCP.

Recalling that the bank headed by Pedro Castro e Almeida had a profit of 568.5 million euros, Paulo Raimundo recalled that Portuguese private banking “earned about 4.4 million euros a day in 2022”.

“At whose expense was this? At the expense of those who eat on Friday, can barely eat on Monday, and work Friday, Thursday, and every day”creased.

Paulo Raimundo recalled that “he is not coming back”, the Portuguese are “cheers to statements from those who suggest from the top of their pedestal” of how they should live, the rescue of BPI President Fernando Ulrich’s statements – “Oh, wait a minute, wait a minute” – , and Food Bank President Isabel Jonet’s suggestion that people should be less let’s eat steaks, both delivered at the time of the troika.

For the communist leader, “the so-called parties with certain accounts” are at the service of the likes of Pedro Castro e Almeida and the “The richest 5% in Portugal, who concentrate 42% of all the country’s wealth”.

“What is needed is to face the embarrassing profits of the banking industry, invest in housing and halt the rise in rents and benefits”defended.

During his speech of about 20 minutes, Paulo Raimundo also criticized the Prime Minister, as the current government had taken the option of “not responding to the concrete problems of life” of all Portuguese.

The Secretary General of the PCP also indicated that PS, PSD, CDS-PP, Chega and Liberal Initiative could have guided the communists in curbing the rise in prices of essential goods, in taxing profits from speculation , or when raising wages. , pensions and social assistance.

“They could, but they don’t. And they don’t, dear comrades and friends, for they are all devoted. It is true that they differ in their pace and some are faster than others, but the rail on which they movement is exactly the same. What we need is not different rhythms with other protagonists, what we need is to change that song, it is to change course”he claimed.
