The socialist parliamentary leader this Thursday accused the mayor of Lisbon of “shaking the water off the mantle” when faced with complicated cases, and now avoiding responsibility for housing after the immigrant tragedy in Mouraria.
In an interview with the newspaper Público and Rádio Renascença, former Social Democratic Secretary of State and former European Commissioner Carlos Moedas defended the imposition of quotas on immigrants seeking to settle in Portugal as a way of avoiding the degrading conditions in which many live. as is the case with the residents of the Mouraria building that burned down last weekend.
The mayor of Lisbon also challenged the government to reclaim quotas of immigrants and criticized the introduction of a visa that would allow foreigners to enter the country for six months to look for work.
Faced with these critical positions towards the government, the leader of the PS bank, Eurico Brilhante Dias, believed that the mayor of Lisbon “is always shaking water off his mantle”.
“The same thing had already happened when the floods happened, or in the discussion of the altar [para as Jornadas Mundiais da Juventude]. The responsibility for housing in Lisbon lies with the mayor. The mayor of Lisbon must concentrate on his tasks, on his powers”responded.
According to the PS parliamentary leader, Carlos Moedas also revealed “a great lack of knowledge about the visa issuance process, especially regarding residence permits”.
“He speaks of quotas when quotas were suspended for years, namely by a decision of the government of which he was a part and because the unemployment rate reached almost 18%”he stated, in reference to the PSD/CDS-PP governments led by Pedro Passos Coelho.
