PS accuses Montenegro and Moedas of “deep contempt” for immigrants

The deputy secretary-general of the PS on Saturday accused Luís Montenegro and Carlos Moedas of having a “profound misconception and even a deep contempt” for immigrants and believed that the right is “unable to arouse empathy with citizens” .

“Equality has a broad spectrum for us: in terms of gender, individual freedoms, social rights, human rights, migration policies. And in this respect, our equality is not the equality that our opponents defend,” said João Torres.

The Deputy Secretary General of the PS opined that “it is not the equality of the PSD from the start, nor in Dr. [presidente da Câmara Municipal de Lisboa]nor in Doctor Montenegro’s version [presidente do PSD]in both cases with a deep misconception and even a deep contempt, something that a few years ago would have been unthinkable in a founding party of our democratic regime”.

“Our right is really incapable of arousing empathy with citizens, it is not even capable of arousing empathy with people,” João Torres criticized during the opening of the equality convention “Which society do we want in 2023?”, promoted by Socialist Women, which takes place at the convention center of Aveiro.

The socialist leader also stated that “those who insist on following the same paths of the past, those who insist on focusing sometimes on personal attacks, sometimes on capitalizing on difficulties in a way that is so often unacceptable or even, and even more seriously, whoever insists on following the path of normalization of the extreme right, should remember that it is precisely at these moments that the PS is most united and most strengthened”.

João Torres also referred to the parliament’s approval on Friday of the “Decent Work Agenda”, as it was “an important and important step” that “symbolizes the commitment of the PS to the workers” and will translate into ” concrete progress” and “more rights and less uncertainty”.

During the same opening session of this convention, the Deputy Minister of Parliamentary Affairs also spoke about the issue of migration flows, “one of the biggest challenges” currently facing Portugal and Europe.

“The best way for us to achieve equality is to continue to build an open, inclusive and innovative country,” defended Ana Catarina Mendes, pointing out that “accelerating the entry of foreigners does not increase the number of migrants, but significantly reduces illegal immigrants”.

The minister said the so-called “foreigners law is a good tool to ensure that illegal immigration is combated”, as well as human trafficking.

Ana Catarina Mendes also indicated that the government “will conduct a tour of the country next month to assess the goals of the Sustainable Development Agenda goals”, which aims to demonstrate how the executive of these objectives. , years away from the end of his term”.

The minister indicated that the Escolhas program, which aims to promote social integration and equal opportunities, “will have a new edition from June, promoting integration and inclusion through culture”.
