Chega deputy summons PSP to Lisbon City Council after being accused of xenophobia

Chega’s deputy in the Lisbon City Council, Bruno Mascarenhas, this Tuesday summoned the police to the meeting of this body and filed a complaint against Miguel Graça, independently elected by the PS/Livre coalition, accusing him of racism and xenophobia .

At around 4:45 p.m., Lusa discovered on the spot that two officers of the Public Security Police (PSP) entered the room where the meeting is taking place, at Forum Lisbon, and left a little later, accompanied by Chega’s municipal deputy.

At the time, the deputies asked what was going on and the president of the Lisbon City Council (AML), Rosário Farmhouse (PS), decided to interrupt work to clarify the situation.

Minutes later, Chega’s deputy re-entered the room and told Lusa that he had called the PSP to “file a complaint” against deputy Miguel Graça, accusing him of a racist and xenophobic intervention.

Earlier, Bruno Mascaren welcomed the news that the decision to build a mosque in Martim Moniz will be reconsidered: “The municipality understood that it was a real danger for the city that radical Islam was present there”.

“It is one thing to welcome those who come here, another thing is to defend the ghetto policy, because multiculturalism is nothing but defending the ghetto policy,” said Chega’s deputy.

Delegate Miguel Graça questioned the conference table and considered Chega’s intervention to be “a racist and xenophobic statement”, warned that “racism is a crime in Portugal” and asked for the extract from the minutes containing Bruno Mascarenhas’ intervention to be sent to the Equality Commission. to steer. and Against Racial Discrimination (CICDR).

Responding to Chega’s deputy, Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas (PSD) said it was important “to look at the mistakes of history”, referring to the fact that World War II “began in a war of a Nazi party against what was multicultural” and whereas “this struggle against what is multicultural is always the origin of war, and being multicultural is the basis of everything in a society”, including innovation and development.

“We have to be very, very, very careful, deputy, with this kind of logic, because multiculturalism is the exact opposite of ghettos. Being multicultural really means being able to move forward in a better and more tolerant world,” the PSD mayor declared.

About 15 minutes after the interruption, the meeting resumed and President Rosário Farmhouse explained that it was Deputy Bruno Mascarenhas who called the PSP to file a complaint and “accidentally the police entered the municipal meeting and interrupted the work” .

“I have already had the opportunity to speak with the two PSP officers to clarify that this cannot happen, it could not have happened,” said the chairman of the meeting, adding that the police officers entered “accompanied by a Chega’s assistant”.

After that information, since only the president of the assembly is authorized to call the PSP, the municipal groups of PSD, PS, BE, Livre, PCP, Aliança, Iniciativa Liberal, MPT, CDS-PP and PAN protested against the attitude of the deputy of Chega, who considered it “inadmissible” and represents “a violation of the principles of democracy” and questioned the safety of that body, which is the responsibility of the municipal police.

“What happened here today should not have happened. What happened here today must never happen again. People from Lisbon voted for us because they believe that we are able to change Lisbon for the better and not to make these sad figures that we have all made, each in our own way. […]”All of us, as a result of an event that should not have happened, ended up causing a whole uprising here,” the president of the assembly concluded, apologizing to the people of Lisbon for the moment that “is embarrassing”.

Rosário Farmhouse said what happened would be investigated by the assembly’s legal services.
