Defense Minister Helena Carreiras believes Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s decision to award Volodymyr Zelensky the Grand Collar of the Order of Liberty is a “more than deserved” award.
Questioned in Brussels on the sidelines of the meeting at the headquarters of the Atlantic Alliance, Helena Carreira claims that the distinction awarded by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa could be extended to the “people and armed forces” of Ukraine.
“I had no knowledge, but it seems very good to me. I think it is a more than deserved award for someone who fights with the determination, perseverance and courage of President Zelensky,” said the minister, noting that this is “also an award , I believe, for his people and for the Ukrainian Armed Forces itself”.
The presidency of the republic announced on Wednesday afternoon that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will award the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, with the Order of Freedom.
“The President of the Republic planned to announce the award of President Zelensky on the 24th of this month, the date of completion of a year of Russian aggression against Ukraine. Taking into account the parliamentary initiative in this matter, that he has decided to award the President of Ukraine the Grand Collar of the Order of Liberty,” the note from the republic’s presidency reads.
