The president of the Municipal Assembly of Lisbon (AML) asked the Minister of the Interior this Wednesday for clarification about the intervention of the PSP on Tuesday during the meeting of this body, whose presence was requested by a municipal deputy from Chega.
In a statement, Rosário Farmhouse (PS) indicates that he has ordered the services of the AML “the full investigation of the facts” and that he has asked the Interior Minister, José Luís Carneiro, “clarification on the performance of the PSP”. .
On Tuesday, around 4:45 p.m., Lusa discovered that on the spot two officers of the Public Security Police (PSP) entered the room where the meeting took place, at Forum Lisbon, and left a little later accompanied by Chega’s municipal deputy, Bruno Mascarenha’s.
“This unexpected fact occurred without the knowledge and necessary prior consent of the President of the Municipal Council, establishing the work stoppage and the suspension of the meeting”emphasizes Rosário Farmhouse in the note.
Chega’s deputy re-entered the room minutes later and told Lusa that he had called the PSP to “file a complaint” against deputy Miguel Graça (independently elected by the PS/Livre coalition), who accused him of a racist and xenophobic intervention. .
In the communiqué released this Wednesday, the president of the AML “vehemently condemns the course of action” of the Chega municipal group, “on the margins of the democratic political practice and the regiment” of the AML, “a position that is widely manifested by most municipal factions and non-attached members”.
On Tuesday night, the PSP announced it had launched an investigation into officers’ actions at the AML meeting.after a request for intervention because of “a situation of insults and disturbances among municipal officials”.
PSP reported that the 18th police station received a call at 4:36 pm with a request “the intervention of the police following a situation of injuries and disturbances among municipal deputies, in the premises at Avenida de Roma, 14, Lisbon”.
Following the request, a patrol car was called to “investigate the alleged situation” and once there “and at the request of an alleged participant who was outside, police entered the venue to contact the alleged victim, where later it was verified that a session of the Lisbon City Council took place,” the PSP added.
The complaint filed by Bruno Mascarenhas against deputy Miguel Graça came after the Chega deputy welcomed the news that the decision to build a mosque in Martim Moniz will be reconsidered.
“The council understood that it was a real danger to the city that there was radical Islam”said Bruno Mascarenhas, who remembers that it is one thing to welcome visitors to the city, but it is another to defend the ghetto policy, because multiculturalism is nothing but defending the ghetto policy”.
Then, in a question at the conference table, MEP Miguel Graça thought that Chega’s intervention was “a racist and xenophobic statement”, warned that “racism is a crime in Portugal” and asked that the extract of the minutes with Bruno’s intervention Mascarenhas are sent to the Commission for Equality and Against Racial Discrimination (CICDR).
About 15 minutes after the interruption, the meeting resumed and Rosário Farmhouse explained that it was Deputy Bruno Mascarenhas who called the PSP to file a complaint and “accidentally the police entered the municipal meeting and interrupted the work”.
“I have already had the opportunity to talk to the two PSP agents to clarify that this cannot happen, could not have happened”the chairman of the meeting indicated, adding that the policemen entered “accompanied by a deputy from Chega”.
After that information, since only the president of the assembly is authorized to call the PSP, the municipal groups of PSD, PS, BE, Livre, PCP, Aliança, Iniciativa Liberal, MPT, CDS-PP and PAN protested against the attitude of the deputy of Chega, who considered it “inadmissible” and represents “a violation of the principles of democracy” and questioned the safety of that body, which is the responsibility of the municipal police.
