Government announces three days of national mourning for Isabel II’s death

The Council of Ministers on Thursday approved the decree calling for three days of national mourning for the death of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, which will take place on 18, 19 and 20 September.

“Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland left a profound mark on the second half of the 20th century and the first quarter of the 21st century. So, in this moment of prolonged and deep mourning in our oldest ally, the government understands to declare national mourning on September 18, 19 and 20, 2022,” the Council of Ministers justifies.

A statement underlined that the decree of three days of national mourning is a “just tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II”.

One of the days of national mourning coincides with the day of the British monarch’s state funeral, which will take place on September 19 and in which Portugal will be represented by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

Queen Elizabeth II died last Thursday at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, after more than 70 years of the longest reign in British history.

The monarch’s urn is in a burning room at the Palace of Westminster until the state funeral on Monday at Westminster Abbey, also in London.
