After the Pierre Palmade case, the government wants to show that it is up to the task in the fight against drugs. The accident that caused the 54-year-old comedian, then positive for cocaine, takes him out of the woods. And to open a backfire, at a time when public debates are focused on the highly disputed pension reform.
Gérald Darmanin, Éric Dupond-Moretti and Gabriel Attal -ministers of the Interior, Justice and Public Accounts, respectively- thus presented the 2022 results of the fight against drugs on Wednesday.
In recent days, they have already outlined some clues. With in the foreground, this proposal by Gérald Darmanin: withdraw the license of any motorist who drives under the influence of drugs.
Withdraw the permit, create a list of dangerous products, double checks…
Asked about BFMTV-RMC this Tuesday, Éric Dupond-Moretti did not give his opinion frankly, recalling “that the judge has the possibility of canceling the driving license”. However, the former lawyer considered that “the question arises” because “we are not obliged to wait and see.”
Like Gérald Darmanin, he also proposed a solution: create a “list of products that can have dangerous and harmful effects, especially while driving.” Example: “nitrous oxide”, that laughing gas increasingly consumed by the younger public.
For his part, Olivier Véran has hammered out a goal in recent days: to double the number of controls for driving under the influence of drugs. For now, there are about 500,000 per year.
“These are objectives that do not date from yesterday. We are increasing the number of controls, because almost one in five deaths in a traffic accident is related to taking drugs. That’s 700 deaths a year, two a day,” he said. the government spokesman on France 2 recently.
