Lula with formal session at AR, but outside the April 25 celebrations

The Assembly of the Republic will host a formal welcome session for Brazilian President Lula da Silva, parliament speaker Augusto Santos Silva announced this Wednesday, indicating that details, such as the date, are yet to be determined. Lula da Silva will therefore not participate in the memorial session on April 25.

“We will be delighted to receive the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil in a solemn welcoming session, which will be especially thanks to him,” Augusto Santos Silva announced at the end of a meeting of the Conference of Leaders.

According to the president of the parliament, Lula da Silva will intervene at that ceremony, but he indicated that the details, such as the date, will now be handled by him “through the appropriate channels”.

Augusto Santos Silva also said his proposal received a “very large consensus” at the leadership conference and only one party opposed it.

It should be remembered that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, has announced that the Brazilian Head of State will intervene at the formal session on April 25. On the same day, the head of Portuguese diplomacy clarified that the Assembly of the Republic is “sovereign in the decisions it makes”.

Chega has already stated that he is “against the arrival of President Lula da Silva in the Portuguese parliament”.
