End this taboo. The deputies of the Social Affairs Committee are considering this Wednesday a bill for a better management of spontaneous abortion presented by the modern deputy Sandrine Josso.
In France, spontaneous abortion corresponds to a spontaneous interruption of pregnancy before the 22nd week of amenorrhea, that is, around 5 months. One in 10 women is affected at least once in her life by a miscarriage, and miscarriages affect 200,000 pregnancies each year.
Anxiety, hypervigilance and depression
However, there is no specific psychological support protocol. There is urgency, as studies point out several months after this event, to the frequent anxiety disorders and hypervigilance. According to the American Journal of Obstetrics, 10% of affected women experience depression in the following weeks.
The bill therefore proposes “promoting psychological support for female victims” and asks the Health Insurance to “guarantee this care.” It could be done by a doctor or midwife and funded by tobacco tax increases.
Only a collective agreement offers special permits
The former renaissance deputy Paola Forteza had already presented a bill during the previous term, without prospering. In particular, she defended the establishment of a special leave of three days for the affected women and their partners. The former parliamentarian also proposed a public information campaign and the establishment of a toll-free number.
So far, only unions in the technology and consulting sectors have signed an agreement allowing miscarriage leave to be implemented in February. It will allow parents to stop for two days in case of spontaneous interruption of pregnancy before 22 weeks.
This bill could be examined during the Modem parliamentary niche in the spring.
