Marcelo believes that metadata and voter turnout are two challenges in constitutional review

The President of the Republic this Thursday identified the health emergency and the issue of metadata as two challenges in the constitutional review process underway in the Republic’s Assembly.

Speaking to journalists outside the Academy of Sciences, speaking at the opening session of the international conference commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Constitutional Court, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was asked if the issue of metadata poses a challenge to Portuguese justice .

“Metadata, as you know, is a subject that can be treated in terms of constitutional review and I think there is an idea. Let’s see if that is the case and if there is an agreement to solve this problem,” said he.

Asked if he sees this as one of the future challenges for the Portuguese justice system, Marcelo replied: “That is one. Another could be the health crisis.”

The Parliamentary Constitutional Revision Committee took office on January 4, after Chega kicked off the process with an initiative that was admitted to the Assembly of the Republic on October 12.

The mission of the final Constitutional Revision Commission is to try to implement the eighth amendment to the fundamental law since it was passed in 1976, in a process taking place 18 years after the last revision, in 2005.

The process was initiated by Chega, but eight revision diplomas were awarded, one for each party with a seat in the Assembly of the Republic.
