Chega members will demonstrate in the plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic during the session to welcome the Brazilian president, in addition to integrating a street protest being organized, the leader of the party announced on Friday.
“Chega will also demonstrate in the plenary, but of course we will not hold a demonstration in the plenary”André Ventura indicated in statements to journalists during a visit to the Lisbon Tourism Exchange (BTL), stating that the party will find its “own way of responding”.
Ventura indicated that the deputies will not leave the meeting room, but declined to give further details about the protest that will take place during the solemn session to welcome Lula da Silva to the Assembly of the Republic, but the date of which has not yet been officially announced .
Chega’s leader said the president of the Republic’s Assembly said this Friday that “he will not admit verbal abuse inside parliament” but indicated that Chega will be heard “inside and outside parliament that day”.
When asked if it is normal to have verbal abuse in parliament, André Ventura said he referred to a “more aggressive” attitude, to show that his “rebellion is great in the face of the presence of Lula da Silva” in Lisbon.
“We’re going to try to contain ourselves, but at the same time be the expression of the people who will be out there expressing their anger at the presence of a leader, of a president who, in our opinion, should be in prison.”defended.
As announced on Tuesday, the party will also organize a protest in front of parliament.
“Whether it is the 24th, the 25th or the 26th, we have already informed the PSP and the city council that we will occupy the three days of pre-demonstration in front of the parliament when the Brazilian president is present”André Ventura said, hoping it would be “the biggest ever protest against a head of state in Portugal”.
Chega opposes the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil speaking in the Assembly of the Republic, even if not in the April 25 commemoration meeting, but in a solemn welcoming session that will be dedicated to him, defending that it is “a excess” and “an offense” in the fight against corruption.
The leader of the far-right party – who supported Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil’s last election – also said he was “not convinced at all” with the answer given to him by the president of the Assembly of the Republic in the morning, denying along with the President of the Republic organized the participation of the Brazilian Head of State, Lula da Silva, in the formal session on 25 April.
