PSD finds it premature to set profit limits and challenges government to return additional tax revenue

The PSD defended this Monday that it is premature to put limits on profit margins in the market, urging the state to return the increased tax revenue and monitor whether there are situations of “immoral and undignified” price increases.

“Whoever benefits most from inflation is the state. It is immoral that the government does not take advantage of the increased tax revenue to give it back to the Portuguese, the middle class and the most disadvantaged”defended the leader of the PSD Pedro Duarte, at the end of the meetings of the Permanent Commission and the National Political Commission of the PSD.

Asked whether the Social Democrats would support an eventual enactment of limits on profit margins on the sale of essential goods, the chairman of the PSD’s National Strategic Council (CEN) said he would “absolutely premature and precocious to defend a measure of this nature at this stage”.

For now, he defended the government “it must create mechanisms and measures to strengthen control and supervision to understand what happens to any profits, if they are disproportionate and could be immoral”.

“We must understand what is happening, there is only one entity that can give us these values in a credible way: it is the state (…) It is absolutely unworthy, immoral if there are market agents who take advantage of this circumstance to inappropriately make increases”warned.

For the leader of the PSD, “Without very concrete data, the PSD cannot defend such a measure, which could harm the functioning of the market”.

When asked if he completely excludes a profit-determining measure, in case the state inspection concludes that there are disproportionate profits, Pedro Duarte replied: “The PSD does not exclude the need for measures to be taken, we will have no problem with that, courage and detachment do not. But it is absolutely precocious and premature to defend such a measure at this stage”.

“Whoever has benefited most from this situation is the State, we would like the government to act on its profits”insisted.
