Housing program announced by government “will have very serious consequences for the country”

The president of the Liberal Initiative believes that the More Housing program announced by the government “will have very serious consequences for the country”, undermining confidence and jeopardizing legal certainty.

“The government has made a very serious mistake with this More Housing package. It has been very badly received. If implemented, it would have very serious consequences for the country”said Rui Rocha in statements to journalists on the sidelines of an initiative he carried out this Friday in contact with passengers on the Transtejo service in Cacilhas, in the municipality of Almada.

The Council of Ministers approved the Meer Wonen program on Thursday, consisting of five pillars: increasing the housing supply, simplifying permit processes, increasing the number of homes on the rental market, combating speculation and protecting families.

The program legislation Mais Habitação, published by the government at the beginning of this month on the official website Consulta LEX, mentions that the issuance of new registrations of local lodging companies will be suspended until December 31, 2030, “with the exception of rural housing areas, under conditions to be determined by decision of the members of the government responsible for the areas of economy, housing and territorial cohesion” and specifying that “it does not apply to the Autonomous Regions”.

For the president of the Liberal Initiative, this is “an attack on private property and an attack on an economic activity such as local accommodation”, demonstrating that this is “a state that cannot be trusted”.

Rui Rocha also said that the government is starting to realize that “this is a huge mistake” by now using the tactic of “dropping measures, starting with less controversial and less onerous measures”.

“With this publication of measures in pieces, the cabinet itself is sending a clear signal that it does not think it will be useful to implement the housing package as a whole”he stressed.
