Montenegro says the government denies that the country is at the tail end of Europe

This Sunday, the PSD chairman accused the government of “having a party” around public accounts and “denying the reality” that the country is “at the end” of Europe and in a “process of impoverishment”.

“The government denies it, the government celebrates public accounts, celebrates economic growth and denies the reality: we are at the end of Europe, we are in a process of impoverishment.said Social Democratic leader, Luís Montenegro, speaking in Vila Real, where the “Building the Alternative” conference ended today, answering a question about the increase in street protests.

Reinforcing the idea that the government and the Prime Minister, António Costa, are “in denial”, Luís Montenegro argued, “Of course, that people are getting tired of seeing how political and governmental power give an idea of a country, to give an idea of reality, which they don’t feel every day”.

The PSD leader also stressed that “Portugal is unfortunately a country where more and more Portuguese earn the national minimum wage and the minimum wage is getting closer and closer to the average wage”.

António Costa, he added, “runs around the country selling works for everything and everywhere, and he says there is money for everything and something else because of the amount of money that comes from the Recovery and Resilience Program”. .

This is, he insisted, “his political program”.

“And people wonder, but there is still so much money in the state coffers and our lives are getting worse and worse? How is it possible that we put 3.2 billion euros into the TAP airline, which was private and that this government wanted to nationalize , while we are struggling every day,” he emphasized.

This, continued Luís Montenegro, “will give rise to processes of contention and frustration”.

“And I can only understand them and come up with political solutions so that the situation can change in the future,” he insisted.

When asked if one of the solutions is to limit prices, the leader of the PSD replied that “it could, at the very least, involve a very strict inspection of price formation processes and also possible speculative practices, particularly in the food sector”.

Luís Montenegro insisted that he had been warning for a year about the “disparity between the rate of inflation on the one hand and the rise in commodity prices”, namely food products, energy or rents, and house payments for those who have a home loan.

“I’ve always said there needs to be an answer to that and I said more. I said last year that the state drains most of the resources society can generate from society, in the form of taxes,” he said.

And, he added, “there is immorality here.”

“The state is taking from citizens, households, institutions and companies more than initially foreseen in the state budget and, on the other hand, it provides poorer services and is unable to contain the rise in the price of essential goods” , emphasized .
