The PCP’s secretary-general this Monday expressed positive expectations for the meeting between the Chinese and Russian presidents, insisting that “if anyone has been looking for solutions for peace” in Ukraine, it has been the Beijing regime.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has already landed in Russia, where he will meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin today and Tuesday on a state visit that aims to strengthen the partnership between the two countries and in which the two leaders of State will discuss the Beijing proposed plan to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
Asked about these meetings, on the sidelines of a PCP press conference on housing, Paulo Raimundo believed that “anything that opens paths to peace is positive”.
“If there is one thing that I think we can say with certainty, it is that if there is anyone who has sought solutions for peace and invested in ways to peace, even with concrete proposals, it is the Chinese government, especially the Chinese president,” he said.
The PCP leader said that while he was unsure of what will happen at this meeting, “it would be positive that these plans towards peace” are in place, emphasizing that people no longer need “more war, more gasoline”. to have..
In a peace plan proposed at the end of February, Beijing stressed the importance of “respecting the sovereignty of all countries”, referring to Ukraine, but also called for an end to the “Cold War mentality”, implicitly criticizing the NATO expansion. China has also called for an end to Western sanctions against Russia.
This week’s meeting also comes after the International Criminal Court, based in The Hague, accused Putin of being personally responsible for the abduction of thousands of children from Ukraine. Governments that recognize the court’s jurisdiction will thus be obliged to detain Putin if he visits their country.
The Chinese government did not provide details about the purpose of the visit. Before the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Xi and Putin had declared a “boundary friendship”, but China has tried to maintain a neutral position in the conflict.
