Marcelo with a message for racial inclusion

This Tuesday, the President of the Republic released a message alluding to the International Day of the Struggle for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, “underlining the importance of unity around a more inclusive and less unfair Portugal”.

Marcelo defends “the possibility of a dignified and full life for all, regardless of their ethnicity and origin”.

“Let us not allow prejudice and distrust to take the place of friendship, open dialogue and good neighborliness,” the president wrote, also emphasizing that this is “a moment of challenges, from the recent pandemic to the consequences of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. and its impact on everyone’s daily life”.

“Let’s focus on what brings us together. May the country we leave to future generations be fairer in terms of diversity than the country we were born in,” reads the presidential message.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was proclaimed in 1966 by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly. The date, March 21, pays tribute to the victims of the police massacre of participants in a peaceful demonstration against apartheid that took place on that day in 1960 in Sharpeville, South Africa.
