Pensions: the left senators in turn present an appeal before the Constitutional Council

The appeal of the senators follows those presented by deputies from Nupes and RN, but also by Elisabeth Borne herself.

The left-wing senators, for their part, presented an appeal to the Constitutional Council on Thursday against the pension reform approved by Parliament on Monday. The common call of the senators of the three leftist groups represented in the Senate, PS, CRCE with a communist majority and ecologists, is articulated in two series of questions.

In the first place, regarding the legislative vehicle used, namely, a law to reform the financing of Social Security, considered “inadequate” for a reform of this magnitude. And then about the activated procedural levers, articles of the Constitution (from 47-1 to 49.3) or the Senate regulations that allowed speeding up the debates and then approving the reform without a vote in the National Assembly.

Several resources already presented

They point out in particular “a concentration” of “attacks on the demands for clarity and sincerity in parliamentary debate.” The deputies of the Nupes left-wing alliance and those of Agrupación Nacional have already presented, each on their own, appeals before the Constitutional Council, which was also seized directly by Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne.

The Constitutional Council must also examine the admissibility of a request for a shared initiative referendum (RIP), a mechanism for association of elected officials and citizens initiated by the left to challenge the government project, and which was presented to it this Monday. President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday that his highly controversial pension reform was “necessary” and he wanted it to take effect “at the end of the year”.
