Montenegro calls for “a thorough investigation” and “very quickly” of what happened at the Ismaili Center

The president of the PSD asked that a “thorough investigation” be carried out “very quickly” into what happened this Tuesday at the Ismaili Center to rule out links between this crime and other forms of violent crime and terrorist activity .

Speaking to RTP, in Geneva, Switzerland, where he is on the last day of an almost week-long tour of the Portuguese communities in several European countries, Luís Montenegro was asked about the deaths of two people this Tuesday morning at the Centro Ismaili in Lisbon after a knife attack.

The PSD chairman reiterated, as he had done late morning in a publication on the social network Twitter, his condolences to the families of the victims and a word of appreciation for the actions of the PSP, that “a very immediate action”, but left another appeal.

“I hope that very soon the authorities can fully clarify all the contours of this situation so that we can reassure the Portuguese people regarding our security and to rule out possible scenarios of more violent crime that could have any connection with any terrorist activity or a terrorist network”he claimed.

Montenegro said he sincerely wished there was no connection to this crime, which he classified as “heinous and unforgivable”, and assured that he had no more elements.

“I hope that this investigation can be very, very fast. We must use all available resources so that this can happen and that an exemplary punishment is finally given for this criminal, heinous and unforgivable act.”he said.

Asked by the RTP journalist about what could have gone wrong in this case, the PSD president said he did not want to “contribute to creating social panic” but also refused to devalue Tuesday’s episode.

“I hope that very, very quick and thorough investigations are made into these events and that measures can also be taken to reduce violent crime, which has unfortunately increased in urban centers like Lisbon. I am not saying that things are mutually exclusive. related.”he noticed.

The PSD chairman stressed that “if there is one thing that contributes to citizens’ insecurity, it is the feeling of insecurity itself”, that episodes like this Tuesday can exacerbate violent crime and that therefore “must be avoided at all costs avoided”.

The attack on the Ismaili Center in Lisbon claimed two lives – two women in their 20s and 40s who were inside when a man entered with a knife.

The suspect was eventually hit by the police and admitted to São José Hospital.

According to the interior minister, the man suspected of Tuesday’s attack on the Ismaili center in Lisbon has international protection status and was not the target of “any alert” by the authorities.

“Everything suggests that this is an isolated act,” said José Luís Carneiro, adding that the circumstances and motives of the crime are being investigated, and warned of the need to “avoid hasty analyses”.
