Parliament will debate “immigration and security” next Wednesday.

The Assembly of the Republic will hold a topical debate on “immigration and security” next Wednesday, proposed by Chega following the attack on the Ismaili center in Lisbon, which left two dead.

At the end of this Wednesday’s leadership conference, Socialist deputy Maria da Luz Rosinha indicated that the deputies had decided to schedule a topical debate “on immigration and security” on April 5, at Chega’s request.

The Leaders’ Conference has also agreed between April 12 and April 21, the date on which the welcome session for Brazilian President Lula da Silva will be held has not yet been set, regarding his state visit to Portugal.

When asked if the definition of the date will be postponed, the leadership conference spokeswoman denied any postponement.

“It is not being postponed, it is something that falls within the remit of the President of the General Assembly [da República], which may be reported later at the next leadership conference. The next one is on the 12th, we still have plenty of time,” he replied.

Political statements and debate on a petition were scheduled for the 12th.

The following day, the delegates discussed a government bill transposing a Community aviation directive, a PCP bill on the broadcasting regime and four Liberal Initiative projects on rail transport.

A petition about “discounts for the GNR health care service” will also be discussed on that day.

On the 14th, a topical debate on gender inequality in the world of work will be held at BE’s request and a PSD bill on social support and another by Chega on early retirement will be discussed.

The following week, on the 19th, there will be a topical debate marked by the PCP and a PS resolution on “modernization of public administration” will be discussed. On this day, delegates will also discuss two BE bills on “sexual orientation and non-discrimination”.

The 20th will be devoted to a PSD debate, still without a topic, and the next day parliament will discuss a government bill on “the relationship between municipalities and aerodromes and some simplification of procedures”.

On the same day, delegates will discuss, among other things, two petitions, one on the end of doctoral exam fees and another on the “right of pet mobility”.

This Wednesday, in statements to journalists when the leadership conference was already taking place, André Ventura criticized the rejection of Chega’s request to hear the interior minister in committee and indicated that the party “does not give up the investigation of the truth”. before that, he vigorously planned a debate on “immigration, security and terrorism”, which had already been announced on Tuesday.

“The subject is also related to the case that has occurred, but it is much broader and has to do with the recent changes to immigration law made by the government. We do not want to associate the debate that will take place exclusively with this case we have had a series of episodes in recent months of scenarios and cases showing that the dismantling of the SEF, the automatic residences assigned by the legislation and the excessive flexibility of entry have led to very serious problems at consulates, serious security problems and problems of serious immigration issues,” he stressed.

Two women were killed and another person was injured in a knife attack at Lisbon’s Ismaili Center on Tuesday by Abdul Bashir, an Afghan man who was arrested and hospitalized after being shot by police.

The nationwide director of the Judiciary Police (PJ) said on Wednesday that “there is no indication whatsoever” that the attack was an act of terrorism, admitting it resulted from “a psychotic break by the aggressor”.
