The Minister for the Ecological Transition is not in favor of the ban on private planes

Invited this Monday to the set of the Public Senate, the Minister for the Ecological Transition estimated that a ban on private planes, without coordination at the European level, “would not make sense.”

Should private jets be banned? This is the subject of a bill of the environmental deputies led by the elected representative of Paris Julien Bayou, and which will be debated in the hemicycle of the National Assembly on Thursday. But it does not receive the approval of the Minister of Ecological Transition, Christophe Béchu.

“In France we emit 400 million tons of greenhouse gases. Private planes are 400,000 tons, or 0.1% of national emissions, ”he explained on the set of the Public Senate.

The Minister denounces the “hypocrisy” which, according to him, would consist of “taking a measure” without coordination at the European level.

An EELV bill debated this Thursday

If this “applies within the perimeter and airports in the immediate vicinity [peuvent] Circumventing this ban would be meaningless,” pleaded Christophe Béchu. “We are interested in working on a European scale,” he insisted.

The ban defended by the Green MEPs would affect “non-scheduled passenger air transport services that are not commercially operated”, as well as non-scheduled public air transport services “with a number of passengers of less than sixty”.

In the National Assembly committee last week, the bill was rejected. It will still be debated on the floor on Thursday, but its adoption is unlikely.

“A simple observation: when we listen to the majority, we understand that everything has to be changed, but above all not to change anything. Regarding the climate, however, we will have no other option,” lamented the president of the environmental group. Cyrielle Chatelain.
