CRANE. Costa says he wants “the whole truth to hurt who it hurts”

The prime minister said in the parliamentary committee of inquiry into TAP’s management on Tuesday that he “wants to know the whole truth and it hurts who it hurts” and claimed the country is always better when it knows the truth.

António Costa spoke at Palácio Foz, in Lisbon, during a session designed to mark the end of the legislative process of the new law that will allow higher education polytechnics to award doctorates.

When asked if the government is concerned about what the outgoing executive president of TAP, Christine Ourmières-Widener, will say today in the parliamentary committee of inquiry, and also about the fact that PSD leader Luís Montenegro will not have the financial right of this company, Gonçalo Pires, having been accused of lying in the Assembly of the Republic, the Prime Minister replied: “Let there be no doubt, I never worry when it comes to finding out the truth”.

“Find out the truth, the country never gets worse when you know the truth,” the executive leader stressed.

António Costa later emphasized that on the contrary, the country “always gets better, no matter what the truth is, and it hurts who it hurts”.

Faced with journalists’ insistence on the subject of TAP and the consequences the outcome of the Commission of Inquiry could have on his government, the Prime Minister confined himself to reaffirming the following principle: “The truth should never concern us”.

“Let’s not prejudge the results for now and let those who work, work, fill out the reports. Then, if there are lessons to be learned, lessons will be learned,” he added.
