Speaking to journalists at the entrance to the inaugural session of the governing bodies of the CIP, in Lisbon, Luís Montenegro did not respond directly to the statements of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who believed on Monday that there was still no alternative to the government, nor to Chega’s leader, who challenged the PSD to file a motion of censure, repeating only three messages.
“Firstly, the PSD is against the PS and the government and that’s all. Secondly, the PSD and its leader are not in anyone’s pocket, they have full independence in their political action and thirdly, the PSD assures the country, the Portuguese and the President of the Republic who is an alternative to the PS government and that we are ready to take all the consequences as an alternative when it is opportune”he claimed.
The PSD leader recalled that in principle parliamentary elections will not take place until 2026, but assured that “if the President of the Republic makes a different assessment and puts forward an election moment before 2026” the party and itself are ready “today for whatever it takes”.
On Monday, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stated in statements to journalists that “in the same way that the opposition cannot take it for granted that the president pushed, pushed, pushed will one day bring about the dissolution – it is better not to assume that the president as a guarantee is not a hostage of the opposition – but neither can the government assume that, because it has an absolute majority, this is a life insurance policy that there will be no dissolution.
“The president is not in the pocket of the opposition, nor in the pocket of the government. He is in his pocket, and he is free and independent,” said the then head of state.
